EDT vs EDP vs Parfum vs Extrait: What's the Difference?

The words on a perfume bottle – Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, Parfum, Extrait – describe the concentration: how much perfume oil is blended into the alcohol base. Concentration affects how strong a fragrance feels, how long it lasts on skin and, often, the price.

The main concentrations

Exact percentages are not regulated and vary from house to house, but these are the commonly cited approximate ranges:

  • Eau de Cologne (EDC): roughly 2–5% perfume oil. Light and refreshing. Browse Eau de Cologne.
  • Eau de Toilette (EDT): roughly 5–15%. Fresh, easy to wear, popular for daytime. Browse Eau de Toilette.
  • Eau de Parfum (EDP): roughly 15–20%. Richer and usually longer-lasting than an EDT. Browse Eau de Parfum.
  • Parfum: roughly 20–30%. Dense and concentrated. Browse Parfum.
  • Extrait de Parfum: usually the highest concentration, often 20–40%. Browse Extrait de Parfum.

You will also see names like Intense, Elixir or Le Parfum. These are brand names for a stronger or reworked version of a fragrance, not a fixed technical category.

Is a higher concentration always better?

Not necessarily. A higher concentration usually means more depth and longer wear, but the same fragrance name can smell noticeably different between its EDT and EDP versions, because perfumers often adjust the formula, not just the strength. Lighter concentrations can feel more comfortable in hot weather or in close-contact settings like the office.

How to choose

  • Hot weather, daytime, office: an EDT or a fresh EDP is usually comfortable.
  • Evenings, weddings, cooler months: an EDP, Parfum or Extrait gives more presence.
  • Compare versions: if you like a fragrance, check whether its other concentrations suit you better – for example Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum and Bleu de Chanel Parfum.
